Q&A: How can I form a clear plastic, acetate or acrylic, to make boxes to enclose collectibles?

Question by Manuel Q: How can I form a clear plastic, acetate or acrylic, to make boxes to enclose collectibles?
I got lots of old toys (dolls, cars, action figures) big & small collectibles which I would like to preserve in clear plastic enclosures. These items if enclosed, would be kept from dust and insects, and would give them a longer self-life. These would also serve as decorative piece, can be displayed in your living or bedroom or somewhere inside your home you found appropriate.

There are books on this. See-Vacuum forming.
Also clear acrylic sheet (at hardware store) can be cut, sanded, and glued to make sturdy cases. Accuracy of the fitted pieces is imperative!

Where is the best resource for finding prices for collectibles and coins?

Question by keenbee: Where is the best resource for finding prices for collectibles and coins?
I want to find a price guide for pricing coins and collectibles. I would like to sell some items either on Ebay or in ads. Any suggestions on the best place to sell.

Best answer:

Answer by I. B. Zoxx
I’m going to stick with coins in my response, since that is what I know – but – the first thing you need is a good reference book. Most public libraries have the “Standard Catalog of World Coins” (published by Krause Publications), which is the most commonly used guide for pricing world coins. There are similar reference books for baseball cards, banknotes, Beanie Babies, and other items. Check your public library first.
Where to sell? EBay is probably as good as anything. Local coin and hobby shows are good, but the up-front cost of a table can be steep. Advertising in trade publications like Coin World or World Coin News may work for you. The Coin World and World Coin News web sites list advertising rates.

What do you like about your comic book and collectible store?

Question by : What do you like about your comic book and collectible store?
I am interested in getting some more info for an assignment. What are the things you like most about your local comic book shop or collectible store. What products are you most interested in, what is it about your favorite place that you like from different atmospheres to the different decor.

Best answer:

Answer by Lady Luna
I live in Gloucester, which is in the countryside of England, so I don’t have a comic book store near me. But I do have a store that sells manga and video games, so close enough!
I love my manga store, just because it’s so homely. It’s kind of enclosed, so I feel like I’m in a room, not a store. The staff are pleasant, and everyone else who shops there is pretty cool too – I often meet people that share the same interests as me, so it’s fun chatting with them. There are loads of shelves of manga, and there’s an entire wing of video games. There’s a nice atmosphere, just because there’s a lot of people in there all the time. It’s so cool!
I’m mostly interested in manga and Pokemon / DS games, but sometimes I like looking at the Xbox games and the little plushies they have.

Hope this helped! Good luck on your assignment!

Why does cleaning collectible coins decrease their value?

Question by amy2838: Why does cleaning collectible coins decrease their value?
I have read many comments on these boards stating that you should NEVER clean a collectible coin using ANY method, because doing so would decrease it’s value by at least half. Nobody ever says why. Why wouldn’t a clean coin be worth more than one covered with tar, body oils, and gutter slime?

Best answer:

Answer by Mhatt
well, if some famous people has touch it, it has a special value so if you clean them, they fade.

How would I go about finding a reputable dealer to get an estimate for collectible coins?

Question by : How would I go about finding a reputable dealer to get an estimate for collectible coins?
I live an hour north of Sacramento, CA. My parents left me a large amount of collectible coins. I don’t know anything about collecting coins. How can I find someone I trust that I can get an estimate from and possibly sell the coins to?

Best answer:

Answer by curtisports2
You need at least three offers. More if you have the time.

I would start by looking for coin collecting clubs in your area. Many members of clubs are also members of the American Numismatic Association. They will be happy to make recommendations for trustworthy dealers in the area.

What are the best libraries to research art collectibles, antiques and crafts?

Question by Andy: What are the best libraries to research art collectibles, antiques and crafts?
Are there any libraries that would have an enormous amount of information that I can research antiques, art collectibles and crafts?

Best answer:

Answer by GF
The first one that comes to mind is the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, http://www.getty.edu/ .

The Huntington Library is another, http://www.huntington.org/ . And, of course, the Chicago Art Institute, http://www.artic.edu/aic/ .

I’m sure there are many, many more – both museums and libraries. What was the general location or city you were looking for (i.e., Paris, London, Los Angeles)?
